Former DUP Leader Takes Action After Conviction
Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), has initiated the process to forfeit his knighthood. Additionally, he has submitted his immediate resignation from the Privy Council.
These developments were confirmed through a statement released by his solicitor, John McBurney. The statement indicated that a letter, signed by Mr. Donaldson, was sent to the Cabinet Office, expressing his request to renounce and forfeit his knighthood.
Details of the Conviction
The actions follow Mr. Donaldson's conviction on Monday for 18 counts of sex abuse. These charges included one count of rape, involving offenses committed against two women during their childhood.
The solicitor's statement further clarified, "I have this afternoon issued a letter signed by Jeffrey Donaldson to the Privy Council office tendering his resignation from the privy council with immediate effect."
