'The Warriors' Heads to Broadway Stage
The acclaimed concept album by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis, based on the iconic 1979 film The Warriors, is slated to be transformed into a Broadway musical, with its debut anticipated next year. The stage production will be co-directed by Jenny Koons and Andy Blankenbuehler, known for his work on Hamilton.
From Concept Album to Live Performance
The album, titled Warriors, was met with critical praise upon its release in 2024. It retells the narrative of the Coney Island gang, the Warriors, as they embark on a perilous journey back to their home turf in the Bronx. This odyssey unfolds after they are wrongly implicated in the murder of the leader of New York City's most formidable gang.
Roots of the Story
The original narrative stems from Sol Yurick's 1965 novel, which itself drew inspiration from Xenophon's ancient Greek epic, Anabasis. This literary foundation was later adapted into the Walter Hill-directed action film in 1979, which has since garnered a significant cult following.
