The iconic reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial is slated for a new round of draining and repairs. This development comes after former President Donald Trump stated on Monday that five individuals had been arrested and an additional five were under investigation for alleged vandalism. Trump attributed recent issues, including algae blooms and peeling paint, to these acts, which surfaced just weeks after a $14 million renovation project he oversaw.
Vandalism Allegations Detailed
Without presenting concrete evidence, Trump informed reporters that vandals were responsible for the damage. He described an incident where individuals allegedly used a knife to create a significant slit in the pool's paint, initially estimating its length between 290 and 300 feet, later revising it to 350 feet. He further claimed that fertilizer had been introduced into the water, leading to the proliferation of algae. Trump acknowledged that while the damage was not extensive, it necessitated draining the pool once more for repairs.
“It’s not a lot of damage, but we’ll probably have to let the water out and refix it. They went in there with a knife,” Trump told reporters.
The reflecting pool's recent renovation, which cost $14 million, was intended to address long-standing issues and improve its overall condition. However, the reported appearance of algae and paint deterioration shortly after its completion has prompted this latest action.
