New analysis indicates that deaths attributed to air pollution in London have decreased by an estimated 40% over a five-year period starting in 2019. This finding comes from a study conducted by a team at Imperial College.
Mayor Attributes Progress to Emission Zone
London Mayor Sadiq Khan lauded the results, describing them as “overwhelming evidence” that the city's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) initiative is effectively preserving lives. The ULEZ, which charges polluting vehicles to enter central London, has been a key policy in the mayor's efforts to improve air quality.
Broader Health Impacts Identified
Despite the positive trend in mortality rates, the Imperial College team also concluded that the overall health impact of air pollution is more detrimental than prior assessments had suggested. This indicates that while the number of deaths has fallen, the general health burden from pollution may still be substantial or more widespread than previously acknowledged.
