The highly anticipated London Museum, a project that has been a decade in the making, is preparing to reopen its doors in November. Situated within two meticulously restored market halls, the institution will house an impressive collection of 7 million objects. However, its director, Sharon Ament, envisions the new museum as much more than a traditional exhibition space.
A 'Democratic' Space for All Londoners
Ament has described the upcoming London Museum as a "social space for the city," emphasizing its role as a "democratic" venue designed to engage with all residents, rather than solely serving as a static repository for its extensive collections. These collections span London's history, from its Neolithic beginnings to contemporary acquisitions, offering a comprehensive look at the city's evolution.
The director stated that the museum aims to be a vibrant center where visitors can not only learn but also connect and socialize, fostering a sense of community and accessibility.
Diverse Events to Foster Engagement
To achieve its goal of broad engagement, the museum plans to host a diverse array of events. These will include traditional offerings like afternoon tea events and monthly dinner clubs, alongside more contemporary and unexpected happenings such as late-night DJ sets. The intention is for visitors to be able to mingle and even dance among the historical artefacts, creating a dynamic and interactive experience that breaks from conventional museum practices.
