Man Sentenced for Blackmailing and Sexually Assaulting Muslim Men Through Social Media

Conviction for Extensive Social Media Exploitation

Waleed Saeed, a 31-year-old British-born Muslim of Somali heritage, has received a 16-year prison sentence for his involvement in a widespread scheme of blackmail and sexual assault targeting young Muslim men. This case, described by a Metropolitan Police officer as the most significant 'sexploitation' investigation he has encountered, involved Saeed creating more than 100 fraudulent social media profiles.

Method of Operation and Victim Targeting

Snaresbrook Crown Court in London heard details of how Saeed utilized a network of fabricated accounts across platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, and Grindr. His objective was to solicit intimate images from Muslim men and teenagers, some as young as 15. Many of his victims privately identified as gay or bisexual. Saeed would then threaten to reveal their sexual orientation to their friends and family if his demands were not met. In instances where victims were unable to pay the demanded ransom, he would attempt to coerce them into face-to-face meetings, leading to sexual assaults.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

Saeed was convicted of 17 offenses, which included rape, blackmail, and the creation of indecent images of children. The Metropolitan Police are reportedly investigating approximately 100 additional potential victims in connection with this case.

DC Peter Collington, who spearheaded the police investigation, issued a direct plea to other potential victims, stating, "I am making a direct appeal to other victim-survivors who may not have had the confidence to come forward. We want to treat you with compassion, with sensitivity and with absolute confidentiality. What has been done to you is wrong, and we will do everything in our power to support you."
