Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has issued a strong response to U.S. President Donald Trump following his recent comments questioning her political popularity and accusing her of repeatedly requesting a photograph. On Saturday, President Trump asserted that Prime Minister Meloni was experiencing declining popularity in Italy and claimed she was not adequately supporting U.S. efforts to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. He also alleged that Meloni had caused a "great logistical inconvenience" by restricting U.S. access to Italian air facilities for military operations in Iran.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Meloni described Trump's "constant, unprovoked attacks" as "senseless." She directly addressed his remarks about her popularity, stating, "As for my popularity, being your friend has certainly not helped it, nor does it depend on my relationship with you. My popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours."
Regarding the use of Italian military bases, Meloni clarified that their usage is "governed by agreements that we have always respected, and that cannot be violated as long as I am prime minister."

The dispute intensified after Trump's initial claim that Meloni had "begged" for a photo during a G7 meeting in France. Meloni expressed astonishment at this assertion, stating in an Instagram video that she was "frankly stunned." She questioned why the U.S. president would behave in such a manner towards allies and firmly declared, "neither I nor Italy ever beg."
Despite being pictured in close conversation at the G7 summit, where Meloni initially told reporters their relationship was unchanged, Trump later reiterated his claim in an interview with Italy's La7 TV channel, saying, "She begged me to take a photo with her; I felt sorry for her."
