MP Faces Allegations of Assault and Coercion

A Member of Parliament for the Liberal Democrats has been taken into custody on suspicion of assault and engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, according to reports. Gloucestershire Police confirmed the arrest of a man in his 40s from Tewkesbury on Wednesday. Following an interview, he was subsequently released on police bail.

Party Suspension Issued

The Liberal Democrats have announced the suspension of Tewkesbury MP Cameron Thomas from the party. A spokesperson stated that the suspension will remain in effect "pending the outcome of a police investigation." The BBC has sought additional details regarding the nature of the allegations from both Mr. Thomas and the Liberal Democrat party.

Gloucestershire Police stated: "On Wednesday, a man in his 40s from Tewkesbury was arrested on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. The man was interviewed by officers before later being released on police bail."

The Liberal Democrats further elaborated on their decision, with a spokesperson remarking, "Cameron Thomas MP has had the party whip suspended pending the outcome of a police investigation. Allegations of this nature are extremely serious, and it is important that the police are able to investigate properly. We are unable to comment further while the police investigation is ongoing."

Background of the MP

Mr. Thomas, aged 43, previously served as an officer in the Royal Air Force. He was elected as the MP for Tewkesbury in the 2024 general election. Despite his party suspension, he currently continues to hold his seat as an independent MP. It is understood that his access to parliamentary facilities has been temporarily withdrawn.
