National Inquiry into Grooming Gangs Identifies Initial Focus Areas

National Inquiry into Grooming Gangs Identifies Initial Focus Areas

Initial Locations for Grooming Gang Inquiry Revealed

The first areas to undergo scrutiny in the national independent inquiry into grooming gangs have been confirmed as Oldham, Bradford and Keighley, and London. This statutory inquiry, led by Baroness Anne Longfield CBE, is designed to compel both individuals and institutions to account for their actions, or lack thereof, in safeguarding children from sexual abuse.

Scope of the Investigation

Beyond the newly announced locations, the inquiry will also review whether previously identified changes have been implemented in areas that have been subject to past investigations, such as Oxford and Rotherham. Robbie Moore, MP for Keighley, who advocated for Bradford's inclusion in the inquiry, described this development as a pivotal moment.

Organizers of the inquiry have communicated to stakeholders that the initial hearings will concentrate on the roles of government departments, police forces, the Crown Prosecution Service, local councils, and the NHS. They highlighted a significant inconsistency in the implementation of approximately 800 recommendations that have emerged from various inquiries over time.

The experiences of victims and survivors in those areas will be at the heart of these investigations.

Baroness Longfield expressed her aspiration that this inquiry will be comprehensive enough to eliminate the need for any future investigations into grooming gangs. She stated, "These hearings will help us to establish what national institutions and services should have been doing to implement these findings and to protect children from abuse and harm - and what, if any, progress has been made in areas where investigations have taken place."
