Beloved Bear Heads to New York Stage
The highly acclaimed production, 'Paddington: The Musical,' is scheduled to make its Broadway debut on March 30, 2027. The show, which garnered seven Olivier Awards during its successful run at London's Savoy Theatre, will open at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, as confirmed by ATG Entertainment. Notably, the musical will continue its performances in London's West End concurrently with the new U.S. production.
Inspired by Classic Children's Tales
The musical draws its inspiration from Michael Bond's cherished children's books, which chronicle the escapades of Paddington, a small bear from Peru adopted by the Brown family after being discovered at Paddington Station. These stories have captivated audiences globally, leading to numerous adaptations, including three popular films.
Creative Team Expresses Excitement
Tom Fletcher of McFly, who composed the music for the production, described the experience as "the greatest adventure of my career." He highlighted the exceptional reception from West End audiences across all age groups and expressed his enthusiasm for introducing New York audiences to Paddington's curious world. Jessica Swale, the musical's writer, commented that Broadway, with its vibrant theatre scene, storytelling tradition, and imagination, is the ideal setting for this "exuberant and heart-filled story." She humorously added her hope that Paddington would enjoy 'Big Apples' as much as his beloved oranges.
Award-Winning Production and Unique Portrayal
The musical's seven Olivier Awards tied the record for the most Oliviers ever won by a musical. Paddington is brought to life on stage through a unique puppetry technique, involving a two-person team. James Hameed serves as the remote puppeteer, controlling the bear's expressions and providing his voice, while Arti Shah physically embodies Paddington on stage, creating a compelling and immersive performance.
