David Hockney's Private Funeral Confirmed
The funeral for David Hockney, widely recognized as one of Britain's most prominent artists, has already occurred, his publicist has confirmed. The 88-year-old passed away at his London residence earlier this month, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fellow artists, the Prime Minister, and senior members of the Royal Family.
According to his publicist, Erica Bolton, only two individuals attended the funeral: his partner, Jean-Pierre Goncalves de Lima, and his great-nephew, Richard Hockney. This intimate gathering was in line with Hockney's personal wishes.
Memorials and Legacy Preservation
A series of public memorial services are scheduled for the coming year to honor the painter. The first will be held in London during the spring, followed by further events in Los Angeles and Paris, cities where Hockney resided at different points in his life, and in Yorkshire, his birthplace.
It has also been announced that the majority of Hockney's extensive body of work will be bequeathed to various foundations and public institutions worldwide. This move aims to ensure the preservation and accessibility of his artistic legacy for future generations.
King Charles called Hockney a "dear friend and inspiration to so many."
A Seven-Decade Career of Innovation
Throughout his seven-decade career, Hockney was celebrated for his distinctive and vibrant artworks. His portfolio included landscapes of his native Yorkshire, iconic sun-drenched depictions of Los Angeles swimming pools, and innovative iPad portraits of his friends and family. A key figure in the 1960s pop art movement, Hockney maintained immense popularity throughout his life.
In 2018, one of his swimming pool paintings fetched nearly £70 million at auction, setting a record for a living artist at the time. His most renowned works include 'The Splash,' 'A Bigger Splash,' and 'Portrait Of An Artist (Pool With Two Figures).'
Tributes from Prominent Figures
Following Hockney's passing, King Charles expressed that he and Queen Camilla were "greatly saddened" by the loss of "a giant of the world of art and painting, a Yorkshireman through and through, and a dear friend and inspiration to so many."
Artist Dame Tracey Emin reflected on her privilege of knowing Hockney, describing him as "a great artist and a wonderful man, who with the power of art changed the perception of Britishness. A proud chain-smoking homosexual, who flew the flag higher than any other British artist." Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also conveyed his sadness, acknowledging Hockney as "one of Britain's most celebrated artists."
Upcoming Exhibitions
An exhibition of Hockney's work is currently on display at the Serpentine Galleries in London's Kensington Gardens until August. Additionally, two exhibitions are planned for next year to commemorate what would have been his 90th birthday. Tate Modern will feature a multimedia installation, while Tate Britain will host a career-spanning exhibition.
Bolton clarified that the upcoming memorials align with David Hockney's wishes, and details of his funeral were kept private to respect the privacy of his loved ones.
