Romeo Beckham Receives Fine and Penalty Points for Mobile Phone Use While Driving

Traffic Infraction Leads to Court Conviction

Romeo Beckham, aged 23, was found to be using his mobile phone while operating a Porsche 911 Carrera, an incident that also involved an unrestrained dog in the vehicle. This occurred in Westminster last September, leading to a conviction at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Court documents reveal that an officer observed Beckham with both hands occupied by his phone rather than the steering wheel while stopped at a red light. A female passenger was also reportedly using her phone, with an "unrestrained" dog on her lap at the time.

Penalties Issued for Driving Offence

Last Thursday, Beckham was convicted of being a driver not in a position to maintain proper control of his vehicle. The court imposed a fine of £440 and issued three penalty points. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £130 in costs and a £176 victim surcharge.

According to the Metropolitan Police PC Luke Short, who witnessed the event on September 12 last year, Beckham appeared "distracted" and lacked proper control of the vehicle. PC Short's written statement described seeing Beckham at a red light on Victoria Street, noting the unrestrained dog and Beckham looking down, scrolling on a mobile device in his lap.

"As I passed the vehicle on its nearside, I looked down to my right and noted that there was an unrestrained dog sitting on the female passenger's lap," PC Short stated. "I looked across at the driver. I saw that he too had his head tilted down and appeared to be looking down at a mobile phone he was holding low in his lap, near the base of the steering wheel. I could see that he was scrolling on the device with his thumbs."

Following the stop, Beckham was given advice regarding the dog. He was later offered the opportunity to pay a fine and attend a driver awareness course to avoid criminal proceedings for phone use, but he did not respond. Consequently, the case proceeded through the single justice procedure, resulting in his conviction based on police evidence last week. Details of the case became public on Wednesday.

This incident follows a similar situation involving his father, Sir David Beckham, who was banned from driving for six months in 2019 for using his mobile phone while behind the wheel.
