Fans Advised Against Travel to Philadelphia Stadium
Football fans intending to watch the World Cup Group I match between France and Iraq at Philadelphia Stadium on Monday have been urged not to travel due to forecasts of "inclement weather in the region." The highly anticipated 42nd match of the tournament is expected to face heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning.
Match Start Time and Potential Delays
The game is scheduled to kick off at 17:00 local time (22:00 BST). Should the match not begin as planned, it would mark the first delay of this World Cup. Authorities have already announced that stadium gates will not open on time because of the weather conditions.
"Due to inclement weather in the region, gates opening will be delayed," a statement from Lincoln Financial Field, the venue for the match, posted on X. "If you are not in the area, please do not travel to Philadelphia Stadium at this time. A new gates opening time will be communicated once the weather has passed. If you are near Philadelphia Stadium, please take shelter."
Event protocols stipulate that play will be paused for 30 minutes if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium, with fans directed to designated safe areas. While heavy rain was observed three hours before the scheduled start, an official announcement regarding a delayed kick-off had not yet been made.
