South African Court Sentences Key Figures in Major Rhino Horn Trafficking Operation

Major Rhino Horn Trafficking Case Reaches Conclusion

A South African court has delivered sentences to two men implicated in what law enforcement has characterized as the world's most extensive rhino horn trafficking operation. This development brings a partial resolution to a legal battle that has spanned almost two decades.

Sentences Handed Down After Long Legal Battle

Dawie Groenewald, identified as a key orchestrator in the scheme, received a penalty of 2 million rand, with an alternative four-year imprisonment term. This sentencing occurs nearly 16 years after his initial arrest. Groenewald and his associate, Tielman Erasmus, confronted an extensive list of charges. These charges, numbering over 1,700, encompassed offenses such as illegal rhino hunting, dehorning, racketeering, and money laundering.
