Stokes and Atkinson Pulled from County Matches Ahead of Potential England Test Return

Key Players Withdrawn from Domestic Fixtures

England Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have been pulled from their ongoing County Championship matches. This development is seen as a strong indicator that both players are expected to be available for selection in England's third Test encounter against New Zealand.

Investigation Pending, Test Return Anticipated

Both Stokes and Atkinson were initially unavailable for the second Test, which commenced on Wednesday, due to an ongoing investigation into an incident at a London nightclub. Despite this, they were permitted to participate in domestic cricket, with Stokes representing Durham and Atkinson playing for Surrey during the initial two days of their matches, which began on Friday.

However, their withdrawal before day three means Stokes will not continue in Durham's home fixture against Northamptonshire, and Atkinson has departed Surrey's game at Glamorgan. Reports on Thursday suggested that Stokes is likely to resume his captaincy for England in the third Test at Trent Bridge, with the 28-year-old Atkinson also expected to join the squad.

Official Confirmation Awaited

Investigations into the pair's alleged breach of England's midnight curfew, following their victory over New Zealand at Lord's, are still underway. Official confirmation regarding the outcome of these investigations, or the announcement of England's squad for the third Test, is not anticipated until after the conclusion of the second Test at The Oval, where the home side is facing a significant defeat on Sunday's final day.
