Teacher Receives Whole Life Sentence for Adopted Son's Murder and Abuse
Jamie Varley, a 37-year-old teacher, has been handed a whole life prison sentence for the murder and sexual abuse of his adopted son, Preston Davey. The verdict came after an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court, where Varley was found guilty despite claiming Preston's death was an accidental drowning.
His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was also sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of allowing the death of a child, child cruelty, and sexual abuse.
A Façade of Family Life
Detectives revealed that Varley's social media presented a misleading image of a loving family life following Preston's adoption. Det Ch Insp Andy Fallows of Lancashire Police, the senior investigating officer, noted, "They've tried to present as the perfect family, living in the perfect home, having the perfect lives." This carefully curated online presence, filled with photos of their immaculate home, successful careers, and pet dog, masked a far more disturbing reality.
According to Fallows, beneath the "veneer" of perfection, the household was fraught with arguments and issues, contradicting the idyllic image portrayed online.
Preston's Brief Life and Tragic Death
Born in June 2022, Preston was immediately placed into care due to his mother's history of incarceration. He was adopted by Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley in April 2023 when he was nine months old. The couple celebrated the adoption with a "Chosen Shower" and personalized decorations, including a mural of the name they chose for him, "Preston Elijah."
However, the months following the adoption were marked by severe physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Messages shown in court indicated Varley's struggles with new parenthood, expressing exhaustion and anxiety, but investigators stressed that his actions went far beyond typical parental challenges.
Preston suffered multiple "cluster" injuries, including bruising, seizures, respiratory failures, and anatomical abnormalities. He was hospitalized three times before his death: once for a nosebleed and seizure, another time for a rash and bruising, and a third time for a fractured left elbow.
On July 27, Varley rushed Preston to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, claiming he had left the child unattended in the bath and returned to find him submerged. However, medical staff found Preston dry with no evidence of water ingestion. Despite efforts to revive him, Preston was pronounced dead.
A post-mortem examination revealed 40 external and internal trauma injuries, some consistent with "forcible penetration" and sexual abuse, definitively ruling out drowning as the cause of death.
A Manipulative Deceiver
Det Ch Insp Fallows described Jamie Varley as a "serial manipulator and a serial liar," who consistently sought to deceive. "His account is, or was, wholly inconsistent and disbelievable," Fallows stated, adding that Varley showed no evidence of regret or remorse for Preston's death.
