Tragic Accident in Central Park
An 18-year-old man, reportedly a tourist from India, has died after an incident involving a horse-drawn carriage in New York City's Central Park. Police stated that the teenager was riding in the carriage with three other individuals when the driver reportedly dismounted to take a photograph of the group.
According to reports, the horse then bolted, subsequently colliding with another carriage before overturning. The critically injured young man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The three other passengers in the carriage did not require medical treatment.
Investigation and Calls for Change
The Transport Workers Union Local 100 commented on the incident, with Vice President Alexander Kemp stating, "It appears the driver was at least at arm's length from his horse. This is unacceptable. A driver is not supposed to leave the carriage to take photos - ever. We support a full investigation."
<"These incidents are not isolated. We must pass Ryder's Law, end this outdated industry, and ensure a just transition for workers. New York can and must do better." - New York City Council member Shahana Hanif
This accident follows another recent incident in Central Park where a carriage horse named Deniz died after reportedly consuming a toxic plant. These events have intensified the long-standing debate surrounding the safety and ethics of horse-drawn carriages, a popular tourist attraction in New York City.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has previously expressed support for removing the carriages from the park. City Council members Shahana Hanif and Harvey Epstein have also voiced their concerns. Hanif emphasized that such incidents are not isolated and called for the passage of "Ryder's Law," a bill that would cease issuing new carriage licenses and gradually phase out the rides over a two-year period. Epstein expressed his horror at the "tragic accident," highlighting the risks posed to both animals and the public by the industry.
