Tragic Incident at Donegal International Rally
A 15-year-old boy, Tadhg Callaghan Carter, passed away after an incident at the Donegal International Rally on Saturday. The event, held in Trentagh near Kilmacrennan, saw a participating vehicle strike the teenager shortly before 5:00 PM local time. Tadhg was transported to Letterkenny University Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Following the incident, two other spectators were also taken to Letterkenny University Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. As a mark of respect, rally organizers made the decision to halt and subsequently cancel the remainder of the three-day event.
Investigation Underway
An Garda Síochána (Irish police) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatality. Authorities are appealing for witnesses who were present at 'Location 15 on Special Stage 12 Gartan,' specifically requesting anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage from the area to come forward. Motorsport Ireland is also conducting its own investigation into the incident.
Community Mourns Loss
Tadhg Callaghan Carter had recently completed his Junior Cert examinations at St Eunan's College in Letterkenny and was preparing to begin his fifth year of studies in September. The school released a statement expressing their "profound sadness" at his passing, describing him as a "deeply valued and popular member of our school community." They extended their deepest condolences to Tadhg's family and friends, assuring support for the school community during this difficult time.
Pauric McGarvey, Mayor of Letterkenny Milford Municipal District, conveyed a "great sense of sadness and grief" throughout the community. Speaking to Irish broadcaster RTÉ, he characterized the incident as "everybody's worst nightmare," noting how it brought a sobering perspective to the excitement surrounding the rally.
"There was a great buzz about the town here and the county for the Donegal International Rally and it just puts life into perspective and how tragic things can happen," McGarvey stated.
Motorsport Ireland and the Donegal Motor Club also issued a joint statement, offering their "deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased" and requesting privacy for them.
Previous Incidents at the Rally
This marks the first fatality at the Donegal International Rally since 2019, when three-time winner Manus Kelly died in a crash. Prior to that, an 18-year-old spectator died in 2008 when a car left the road, leading to the cancellation of that year's event. In 2002, two marshals also lost their lives in an incident at the rally. The last spectator fatality at a Motorsport Ireland-sanctioned event occurred in 2012 at the Cavan Stages, where two spectators died.
