Former President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he has instructed the U.S. Department of Justice to launch an investigation into major oil companies. The directive comes amidst his accusations that these firms are engaging in price gouging, particularly by not adequately reducing gasoline prices at the pump despite what he describes as significantly lower crude oil costs.
Social Media Post Details Concerns
In a social media post published late Tuesday night, Trump articulated his concerns: “The big oil companies are not dropping their price at the pump commensurate with the sharply lower prices they are paying for oil. Those prices are dropping like a rock! In other words, customers are being ‘gouged.’ I have instructed the DOJ to immediately start looking into this.” He further emphasized his expectation for a rapid decrease in gasoline prices, stating, “Gasoline prices better start going down a lot faster than what I’m seeing!”
The former president's comments suggest a belief that consumers are being unfairly charged at a time when global oil prices, potentially influenced by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, have seen a decline.
