In a landmark legal case, a British Border Force officer and a Hong Kong trade official stationed in London have been incarcerated for espionage on behalf of China. These convictions represent the first successful prosecutions under the recently enacted National Security Act in the United Kingdom.

Peter Wai, the Border Force officer, was handed a 10-year prison sentence. Wai was found to have engaged in covert surveillance activities, described as “shadow policing,” targeting Chinese dissidents residing within the UK. His accomplice, Bill Yuen, a Hong Kong trade official who acted as Wai's handler, received an eight-year sentence.
