Valve Launches Steam Machine with Elevated Pricing, Citing Component Costs

Steam Machine Enters Market with Higher-Than-Expected Price Tag

Valve has officially launched its Steam Machine gaming computer, with initial pricing set notably higher than previously projected. The company has attributed this adjustment primarily to the escalating costs of hardware components in recent years.

In an announcement on Monday, the gaming company stated that the new device, designed to function as both a gaming PC and a console, would retail for £879 in the UK and $1,049 in the US. Valve indicated that this pricing directly reflects the increased expenses associated with manufacturing hardware.

"The overall effect is that our original goal for the price of Steam Machine is no longer viable," Valve commented.

This pricing strategy aligns with a broader industry trend where device manufacturers are increasing, rather than decreasing, product costs to absorb the rising expenses of memory and storage components. Valve had previously announced a 40% price hike for its handheld Steam Deck device earlier in 2026, citing similar cost pressures. Additionally, the new Steam Controller, priced at £85, will be offered in a bundle with a 512GB Steam Machine for £938. A 2TB version of the Steam Machine will be available for £1,149, or £1,208 when bundled with a controller.

Component Costs Impact Pricing Strategy

The Steam Machine, unveiled in November as a PC "optimized for gaming" that can also serve as a console, is a successor to a 2014 device of the same name. The earlier iteration struggled to compete in a market dominated by major players like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft.

Valve informed its audience that when component sourcing for the Steam Machine began in 2023, the company believed it had a clear understanding of potential cost fluctuations. "That understanding was born from the many years of data we all have about the evolution of PC hardware prices - primarily, that it tends to get cheaper over time as new technology arrives," Valve explained. However, the company noted, "Over the past year or so, that has changed quickly and significantly, most visibly for RAM [random access memory] and storage components."

Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst at Ampere Analysis, had estimated a starting price between $700-$800 for the Steam Machine. He suggested that the rising costs prevented Valve from offering a more accessible price point to consumers. Harding-Rolls also indicated that the Steam Machine's price, which is approximately 75% higher than a PS5 console, positions it as a "niche offering." While high-end gaming PCs are typically more expensive than consoles, the cost of games for PCs can often be lower than those for Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo platforms.

Broader Industry Implications

The pricing of Valve's Steam Machine is consistent with a wider trend among device manufacturers adjusting prices upwards to manage increasing memory and storage expenses. RAM, traditionally one of the more affordable computer components, has seen a significant price surge due to high demand, particularly from data centers supporting artificial intelligence applications.

This trend has led to other industry impacts, such as phone manufacturer Nothing canceling plans for a new handset release in September, citing RAM costs. Apple has also indicated it will raise some product prices due to the rising cost of memory chips. Gaming consoles, including the PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2, have also experienced price increases. Market research firm IDC projected in February that memory supply challenges are expected to "persist throughout 2026 and likely well into 2027."

Some industry observers are speculating about the potential implications for the next generation of consoles. Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming commented, "I think we all expected the Steam Machine to be over $1K, but now seeing it, it sets a new hard truth of how much the next gen consoles are going to cost." However, Harding-Rolls cautioned that this might not necessarily be the case for all console makers, as they "have different levers that can be pulled to offset hardware costs, which can support cheaper pricing."
