Windrush Compensation Establishes New Playwriting Award for British Caribbean Talent

New Prize Honors Windrush Generation Through Arts

A significant new award dedicated to fostering British Caribbean playwrights has been established, drawing funds from compensation allocated to a Windrush victim who unfortunately passed away before receiving the payment. The Windrush Prize for British Caribbean Playwrights is believed to be the first major initiative of its kind in three decades, aiming to discover and nurture talent within this community.

The Windrush Prize: Supporting New Voices

The prize will award £10,000 to the playwright of the winning entry. In addition to the financial recognition, the victorious play is slated for a production run at London's Arcola Theatre next year, offering a prominent platform for the new work.

A Legacy of Remembrance

The Windrush Prize was founded by Shereener Browne, who serves as the founder and artistic director of Orísun Productions and is a former barrister. Browne established the award in memory of her late father, Myron Brown. His unreceived Windrush compensation has now been repurposed to create a lasting legacy that celebrates and supports British Caribbean artistic expression.
