World Cup 2026: A Historic Golden Boot Race Unfolds

Elite Strikers Dominate Early Stages

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is quickly becoming renowned for an exceptional Golden Boot contest, featuring some of football's most prominent attackers. Lionel Messi currently leads with five goals from two appearances, closely followed by Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, who each have four goals.

This marks only the second occasion in World Cup history, and the first since 1954, where three players have scored four or more goals after the initial two group stage matches. The early tournament has showcased remarkable goal-scoring prowess from these elite forwards.

Record-Breaking Performances

The tournament has been a stage for numerous records to fall. Lionel Messi, at 38, has surpassed Miroslav Klose to become the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, now with 18 goals in 28 matches. All five of Argentina's goals in this edition have come from Messi.

Kylian Mbappe has also made significant strides, matching Klose's total of 16 goals in an equal number of World Cup appearances. The French forward is aiming to become the first player to secure multiple Golden Boot awards, a feat also eyed by England's Harry Kane.

Erling Haaland, making his World Cup debut, has also impressed, becoming only the sixth player to score multiple goals in each of his first two World Cup games. The 25-year-old has an astonishing record of 59 goals in 52 appearances for Norway.

French football expert Julien Laurens noted, "With the big stars, they want the ball all the time. I guess part of it is that they're not just chasing the Golden Boot, a handful of them are chasing the all-time record too."

Expert Opinions on the Strikers

Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist highlighted the unique qualities of each player: "In terms of natural footballing ability, Messi is out in front, with Kylian Mbappe probably in second. But in front of goal Haaland is as good as it gets."

Ex-England midfielder Karen Carney described the early days of the tournament as a "superstar day," acknowledging the exceptional performances from Messi, Mbappe, and Haaland.

The Impact of the New Tournament Format

The expanded 48-team format for the World Cup appears to be contributing to the increased goal-scoring potential. With more lower-ranked teams participating, top attackers have found more opportunities to convert. Additionally, the World Cup winners will now play an extra round, further increasing the chances for goals throughout the competition.

Despite the intense individual competition, players like Mbappe emphasize team success. "It's not something I'm thinking about right now," Mbappe stated regarding the Golden Boot. "If I start watching him [Messi], I'll feel like I have to do even more, so no, I don't watch what he's doing. I'm only thinking about helping my team - by helping the team, I score goals and get closer to that kind of level."

Norway coach Stale Solbakken championed Haaland, remarking, "He is the best striker - he is not playing for France or Argentina, he scores for Norway. He's scored four goals now, two braces on the biggest stage."

USA striker Folarin Balogun summed up the sentiment among other players, jokingly calling the dominance of Messi, Mbappe, and Haaland "annoying" due to their "inevitable" goal-scoring ability.
